Legends Sports Bar Voted Best Bar to Watch Sports in Long Beach

Long Beach Post

(original article found here) Maybe it’s the giant projector screen that covers its western wall with the marquee game of the day. Maybe it’s the prime spot smack dab in the middle of Second Street in Belmont Shore, or its un-official crown as the “first modern sports bar in America.” There’s something special about watching a big game at Legends Sports Bar, and it being voted best place in the city to watch sports has just as much to do with its past as it does the present. Co-owner Eric Johnson remembers walking into Legends for the first time when he was a child and getting to meet then Rams starting quarterback Vince Ferragamo and the team’s cheerleaders. When he helped purchase the sports bar he inherited a lot of memorabilia lining the walls that includes autographed balls from legendary athletes like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. When they took over, a “jaw dropping” gift to a his business partner—in the form of the Indy Car driven by Bobby Rahal during the Long Beach Grand Prix—was added to the interior decor. “It’s much more than a bar or restaurant,” Johnson said. “It’s like a sports hall of fame kind of deal when you walk in. Certainly the big screen is what sets it at a whole different level. I hear it all the time when I’m at the front door." Johnson’s ownership has made it a point to be a part of the community because he said as one of the businesses that’s synonymous with Long Beach, it’s a responsibility they hold to give back. They’ve sponsored local sports teams from area high schools and even hosted watch parties for Cal State Long Beach men’s basketball teams when awaiting their fates in the annual NCAA tournament. Whether its Monday Night Football, March Madness or FIFA’s World Cup, Legends is always one of the busiest bars inside and out, as people walking by can stop an view the action on the projector through its open patio lining the sidewalk. Johnson said that vibe is a big part of their success and has helped build a loyal patronage. The allure goes past the wings, burgers and beer, it’s the feelings imbedded in the memories while watching sports history unfold inside Legends. “We’ve got great food, great service, I love our location in the heart of Belmont Shore,” Johnson said. “But I think there’s a bit of nostalgia being the first modern sports bar in America, there’s definitely a nostalgia that goes with that. There’s been so many great games viewed in that location that there’s kind of an ambiance that you don’t get in other locations.” Legend's is located at 5236 E. 2nd Street in Belmont Shore. Legendary Rosey Grier visits Legends Sports Bar

November 22, 2014 Rosey Grier at Legends Sports Bar, Long Beach, CA Legends Sports Bar had an amazing surprise vista from one of NFL's truly multi-talented individuals. Roosevelt "Rosey" Grier was born July 14, 1932 and grew up to become an American actor, a singer, a Christian minister and spent several years sharing his talent as a professional American football player. Rosie spent time as a college football player for Pennsylvania State University, and in later years earned a seat in the National Collegiate Athletic Association 100th anniversary list of 100 most influential student athletes - an impressive recognition to say the least. Rosey wears a Rams Helmet Rosey's unique career took off after the NFL where he dabbled as a bodyguard for Robert Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign. He was assigned as the guarding to the senator's wife, Ethel Kennedy, during the Robert F. Kennedy assassination. Although Rosey was unable to prevent that killing, he bravely took control of the gun and subdued the shooter, Sirhan Sirhan. Where most men would hang their coat and call it a game, Rosey moved on from there and embraced other endeavors. He became a television host of his own Los Angeles television show and made approximately 70 guest appearances on various shows during the 1960s and 1970s. From here, Rosey dabbled as a singer where he first released singles on the A label in 1960, and over the following twenty-five years he continued to record on various labels including Liberty, Ric, MGM and A&M records. Most notable of his singing career was his tribute to Robert Kennedy entitled "People Make The World" (written by Bobby Womack) that made the charts peaking at #128 in 1968. Rosey Grier Needlepoint for men You might say that Rosey is his own man clearing his own path in life. He is also well know for his passionate pursuit of hobbies not traditionally associated with men. He is the author of several books, including Rosey Grier's Needlepoint for Men in 1973. Rosey also became an ordained Christian minister in 1983 and applies his unique experiences in life in inspirational speeches he gives as he travels throughout the USA. Legends Sports Bar, the first modern sports bar in America, is proud to congratulate Rebecca Hinderer for taking home the prestigious affirmation of being the "Best Bar-Tender in Long Beach." Helens Hibiscus is the creation of Rebecca Hinderer Rebecca took home the honor by sharing with the Judges her very own creation dubbed "Helen’s Hibiscus"[pictured left], which is a gorgeous violet concoction served in a highball glass. "Helen's Hibiscus" is a creation that mixes layers of gin and Creme de Violette which presents itself as a sophisticated gem of a cocktail that is effortlessly enjoyed at any hour of the day. "One of the most important shifts in perspective we want our patrons to experience is that Legends Sports Bar is not just a 'Beer and Wings' spot," says Eric Johnson, principal of Legends Sports Bar. "We strive to offer our patrons the best of Sport - all sports - including the skill that Rebecca has mastered over the last six years of working as a bartender at Legends. We are so very proud of her taking home the title - it couldn't have been awarded to a more deserving person." While presenting her libation to the judges, Rebecca spoke nervously, yet eloquently, about the cocktail’s historical context, citing “the Roman influence came from my desire to appeal to women, hence the name Helen, which means 'the most beautiful woman.'” Helen’s Hibiscus is a combination of gin, basil, blackberry, Creme de Violette and Hibiscus rose-based soda water (which Rebecca made herself), garnished with an edible hibiscus and blackberry. Legends Sports Bar Congratulates Rebecca Hinderer for grabbing "The Best Bar Tender in Long Beach" title! Rebecca's inspiration comes from her six years of working at Legends and observing her female patrons. During her service at Legends she noted that “most women do not order gin," and that she "wanted to create a drink that would be palatable for women and not too sweet for men.” Rebecca is constantly seeking out new recipes that are both innovative and female-centric but male-friendly. Rebecca is not originally from the Long Beach area but now considers it her home. A professional woman who takes her job seriously, she did not expect to win the competition, but was “truly grateful for the opportunity to fundraise and compete alongside incredible mixologists.”]]>

Legends Sports Bar works to rekindle dream of flying Spruce Goose at Flugtag 2013 https://legendssportsbar.com/legends-sports-bar-works-to-rekindle-dream-of-flying-spruce-goose-at-flugtag-2013/ Sat, 21 Sep 2013 09:00:00 +0000 http://fredcei.com/?p=6579

LONG BEACH, CA, by Joe Segura of Long Beach Press Telegram Co-owners of the popular Belmont Shore sports bar Eric Johnson and David Copley are heading up a Legendary Team that hopes to rekindle the dream of Howard Hughes and his Spruce Goose. A miniature model of the famed aircraft is the team’s entry in the Red Bull Flugtag competition. Nearly 30 teams from as far away as Alaska will compete in Long Beach’s Sept. 21 event, launching their flying machines from Rainbow Harbor’s pier to see which will go the farthest. This year’s Flugtag, German for Flying Day, is a national event, with five cities hosting competitions on the same day: Long Beach, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Washington, D.C., Miami and Chicago. This is the second time it has been held in Long Beach. In 2010, the event drew more than 100,000 people to Rainbow Harbor and the Pike, jamming the area south of Ocean Boulevard as 36 teams launched off a 28-foot-high ramp from the Pine Avenue Pier. In that event, the human-powered semiflying machines included a grand piano, a giant pig and a larger-than-life mock-up of President Obama’s head. The 2010 event is considered the largest single-day event in terms of attendance in the city’s history. Johnson and Copley, also co-owners of the Auld Dubliner on Pine Avenue south of Ocean Boulevard, said that good progress has been made on the construction of their version of the legendary Spruce Goose, which flew Nov. 2, 1947, in the Long Beach Harbor, without the benefit of Red Bull energizing drinks. “We’re pretty far along,” Johnson said, adding that the fuselage is mostly done and work is beginning on the wings. The team members are all friends, and all have collaborated on the project, Johnson said, adding that the majority of the work has been done by the other team members. “They’ve put in a ton of hours,” he said. The five members of the Legendary Team are Johnson and Copley, and George Schano, Legends bar manager, Erik Bakker, a products developer, and Steve Gugerty, graphic designer. Until recently, they have worked mainly on weekends, including one water test in a friend’s pool. But with the competition less than two weeks away, they may have to put more hours into the project, the team members concluded during a Saturday work session. They estimated — figuring by a quick impromptu calculation — that they have worked about 80 hours. The miniature Spruce Goose, the team estimated, could end up weighing about 140 pounds: 80 pounds for the 20-foot-long fuselage, and about 60 pounds for the 26-foot-wide wings. The frame is made of a light aluminum and will be covered with sailcloth, according to Copley. The craft will be powered by the team members, who will run-push it off the Pine Avenue Pier launch site. On the Thursday before the Flugtag event, the Spruce Goose model will be showcased at the Legends bar, and on Friday it will be displayed at the Pine Avenue Circle. Despite the progress, the team members do not share confidence that it will actually fly. “We go back and forth on how far it will fly,” said Copley. Contact Joe Segura at 562-499-1274.]]>
