Announcing Our Newest Collectable https://legendssportsbar.com/announcing-our-newest-collectable/ Fri, 02 Aug 2019 22:52:31 +0000 http://www.legendssportsbar.com/long-beach/?p=2703

If you've been to Legends Sports Bar in Long Beach, then you've seen first hand the incredible lineup of sports memorabilia that has been assembled by the owners over the years. What's most noticeable is the sheer diversity of content from football Jersey's to an Indy car hanging prominently next to their bar. It's a celebration of sport from one corner of the venue to the other! This past month marked a new, and special addition to their incredible collection - The NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship banner! Most patrons might not know this little piece of local trivia, but there is a deep connection between the owners of Long Beach and California State University Long Beach (CSULB). In fact, Legends Sports Bar are what are referred to as an Inner Circle donor to the Long Beach State Athletics department. As such, they support all sports within the athletics program. If you have ever seen a 49'ers men's basketball game, then you'll know they are the half-court shot prize sponsors at every home game! Not only do they support and sponsor basketball, but Legends Sports Bar is an active support of baseball with merchandise giveaways. As if that weren't enough, they participate in food trades and have participated at VolleyBall games with merchandise giveaways as well. Their support runs deep as they not only take care of the fans, but they have a package and level of participation that includes food trade for staff, events and athletes, as well as straight monetary donations. In recognition for all that they do for the CSULB Athletic department, Legends Sports Bar was presented with the Men's Volleyball NCAA Championship banner out of appreciation and support for all that they do - a recognition that Matt Peterson expanded on, "We have a number of unique, one of a kind pieces from the university that we proudly display throughout the restaurant and that are showcased on the Long Beach wall." stated Peterson. "Our new NCAA Championship Banner has a letter of authenticity from the NCAA, and it hung proudly at the NCAA national headquarters after the 2018 season win." explains Peterson. "It now has a new home here at Legends Sports Bar for all to appreciate!". The Men's Volleyball team captured the 2019 season banner which now hangs prominently in their headquarters with a duplicate banner which hangs in the Pyramid. Connection to CSULB runs deep for Peterson as his Grandfather was the founder of CSULB back in 1949, and also went on to be President of CSULB in 1959. Matt's business partner and first cousin Eric Johnson attended CSULB and continues to lead the charge and enthusiasm in rooter-bus events that originate from their venue on 2nd street. (If you haven't experience that yet - you've got to do it and experience first hand the enthusiasm and thrill!). "The university has always been a part of our lives and a place we are incredibly prideful of." says Peterson. "Our involvement through Legends Sports Bar just makes it all the more fun and meaningful for us." The 2018 banner will be hung prominently at Legends Sports Bar for all to see and is a particularly unique piece of history as it symbolizes CSULB recapturing the NCAA Title, which had last been captured back in 1991 (27 years prior!). This recent recapturing of the Title in Long Beach has been a celebration of the hard work by the staff and student-athletes. As a result of these two back to back wins, Long Beach State is now regarded as the best volleyball program in the nation. Congratulations Legends Long Beach! You're a natural home for this cool 2018 banner.]]>

The shot heard around town

February 27th 2016 was a very good day for a local Long Beach State University student by the name of Alfonso. After being selected to take a shot from the half-court line during the LBSU basketball game for a chance to win $10,000 dollars, Alfonso stepped up and showed everyone watching how to deliver. Legends Sports Bar, owned and operated by a former Long Beach State Graduate, has been a long time supporter of the LBSU Athletic department. For years Legends Sports Bar has challenged students for a chance to win and this time it paid off. Congratulations to Alfonso for showing the crowd how its done. Spend it wisely! Kayaking Silver Medalist Matt Hernandez Visits Legends Sports Bar

Legends Sports Bar was honored with a visit from Matt Hernandez, Silver Medalist in this year's Special Olympics Kayaking event. The team at Legends got a chance to meet Matt who came sporting his beautiful hard earned medal. Matt had recently earned his Silver in the 500 meter Kayaking race in spite of what most would consider insurmountable odds. You see, Hernandez was born with Rubinstein Taybi syndrome, a condition that doctors believed would place his life expectancy to less than 15years of age. Now at 21 years of age, Matt has proven to the world that with incredible work ethic, a deep faith and a strong family connection, life is what we make it to be. “This is such a special time for Matt and our family and we are happy to get to share this amazing journey...” stated Matthew’s aunt Andria Green in an interview after placing 2nd in the event. The journey to this day was no easy road. “They told us he won’t be able to walk, talk or eat on his own,” stated Matt's family. “His grandma would stay up, starting 12 o’clock at night and feed him with an eyedropper like a puppy, till he finally started swallowing,” they continued. The hard work paid off as demonstrated by his Silver Medal. matthernandez]]>

Legendary Rosey Grier Visits Legends https://legendssportsbar.com/legendary-rosey-grier-visits-legends/ Sun, 23 Nov 2014 19:08:20 +0000 http://www.legendssportsbar.com/?p=1823

Legendary Rosey Grier visits Legends Sports Bar

November 22, 2014 Rosey Grier at Legends Sports Bar, Long Beach, CA Legends Sports Bar had an amazing surprise vista from one of NFL's truly multi-talented individuals. Roosevelt "Rosey" Grier was born July 14, 1932 and grew up to become an American actor, a singer, a Christian minister and spent several years sharing his talent as a professional American football player. Rosie spent time as a college football player for Pennsylvania State University, and in later years earned a seat in the National Collegiate Athletic Association 100th anniversary list of 100 most influential student athletes - an impressive recognition to say the least. From there, Rosey went on to be a professional player as part of the New York Giants and most notably the original Fearsome Foursome of the Los Angeles Rams. Rosey also played in the Pro Bowl twice. Rosey wears a Rams Helmet Rosey's unique career took off after the NFL where he dabbled as a bodyguard for Robert Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign. He was assigned as the guarding to the senator's wife, Ethel Kennedy, during the Robert F. Kennedy assassination. Although Rosey was unable to prevent that killing, he bravely took control of the gun and subdued the shooter, Sirhan Sirhan. Where most men would hang their coat and call it a game, Rosey moved on from there and embraced other endeavors. He became a television host of his own Los Angeles television show and made approximately 70 guest appearances on various shows during the 1960s and 1970s. From here, Rosey dabbled as a singer where he first released singles on the A label in 1960, and over the following twenty-five years he continued to record on various labels including Liberty, Ric, MGM and A&M records. Most notable of his singing career was his tribute to Robert Kennedy entitled "People Make The World" (written by Bobby Womack) that made the charts peaking at #128 in 1968. Rosey Grier Needlepoint for men You might say that Rosey is his own man clearing his own path in life. He is also well know for his passionate pursuit of hobbies not traditionally associated with men. He is the author of several books, including Rosey Grier's Needlepoint for Men in 1973. Rosey also became an ordained Christian minister in 1983 and applies his unique experiences in life in inspirational speeches he gives as he travels throughout the USA. Most notable, Rosey founded "American Neighborhood Enterprises" which is a nonprofit organization that serves inner city youth.

Rosey's Football Career

Following Rosey's college career on the defensive line at Penn State University, Rosey was drafted as the 31st overall pick in the third round of the 1955 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Rosey played with the Giants between 1955 and 1962, where he led the team to a NFL Championship in 1956 and the Eastern Conference Championship in 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962. Grier was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1956 and 1960, and was named All-Pro at the defensive tackle position in 1956 and 1958–1962 (Source > Wikipedia). Rosey Grier Number 76 Following time spent in New York with the Giants, Rosey was then traded in July 1963 to the Los Angeles Rams. He became part of the well known "Fearsome Foursome", (other members included Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, and Lamar Lundy) who were considered one of the best defensive lines in football history. Sadly, his football career ended in 1967 due to a torn Achilles tendon. Despite being the oldest member of the Fearsome Foursome, Rosey is in fact the last surviving member of the Fearsom Foursome. Legends Sports Bar is honored to have had Rosey visit us this past Saturday November 22nd, 2014.]]>

From here, Rosey dabbled as a singer where he first released singles on the A label in 1960, and over the following twenty-five years he continued to record on various labels including Liberty, Ric, MGM and A&M records.
