If you've been to Legends Sports Bar in Long Beach, then you've seen first hand the incredible lineup of sports memorabilia that has been assembled by the owners over the years. What's most noticeable is the sheer diversity of content from football Jersey's to an Indy car hanging prominently next to their bar. It's a celebration of sport from one corner of the venue to the other! This past month marked a new, and special addition to their incredible collection - The NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship banner! Most patrons might not know this little piece of local trivia, but there is a deep connection between the owners of Long Beach and California State University Long Beach (CSULB). In fact, Legends Sports Bar are what are referred to as an Inner Circle donor to the Long Beach State Athletics department. As such, they support all sports within the athletics program. If you have ever seen a 49'ers men's basketball game, then you'll know they are the half-court shot prize sponsors at every home game! Not only do they support and sponsor basketball, but Legends Sports Bar is an active support of baseball with merchandise giveaways. As if that weren't enough, they participate in food trades and have participated at VolleyBall games with merchandise giveaways as well. Their support runs deep as they not only take care of the fans, but they have a package and level of participation that includes food trade for staff, events and athletes, as well as straight monetary donations. In recognition for all that they do for the CSULB Athletic department, Legends Sports Bar was presented with the Men's Volleyball NCAA Championship banner out of appreciation and support for all that they do - a recognition that Matt Peterson expanded on, "We have a number of unique, one of a kind pieces from the university that we proudly display throughout the restaurant and that are showcased on the Long Beach wall." stated Peterson. "Our new NCAA Championship Banner has a letter of authenticity from the NCAA, and it hung proudly at the NCAA national headquarters after the 2018 season win." explains Peterson. "It now has a new home here at Legends Sports Bar for all to appreciate!". The Men's Volleyball team captured the 2019 season banner which now hangs prominently in their headquarters with a duplicate banner which hangs in the Pyramid. Connection to CSULB runs deep for Peterson as his Grandfather was the founder of CSULB back in 1949, and also went on to be President of CSULB in 1959. Matt's business partner and first cousin Eric Johnson attended CSULB and continues to lead the charge and enthusiasm in rooter-bus events that originate from their venue on 2nd street. (If you haven't experience that yet - you've got to do it and experience first hand the enthusiasm and thrill!). "The university has always been a part of our lives and a place we are incredibly prideful of." says Peterson. "Our involvement through Legends Sports Bar just makes it all the more fun and meaningful for us." The 2018 banner will be hung prominently at Legends Sports Bar for all to see and is a particularly unique piece of history as it symbolizes CSULB recapturing the NCAA Title, which had last been captured back in 1991 (27 years prior!). This recent recapturing of the Title in Long Beach has been a celebration of the hard work by the staff and student-athletes. As a result of these two back to back wins, Long Beach State is now regarded as the best volleyball program in the nation. Congratulations Legends Long Beach! You're a natural home for this cool 2018 banner.]]>

Legends Sports Bar Voted Best Bar to Watch Sports in Long Beach

Long Beach Post

(original article found here) Maybe it’s the giant projector screen that covers its western wall with the marquee game of the day. Maybe it’s the prime spot smack dab in the middle of Second Street in Belmont Shore, or its un-official crown as the “first modern sports bar in America.” There’s something special about watching a big game at Legends Sports Bar, and it being voted best place in the city to watch sports has just as much to do with its past as it does the present. Co-owner Eric Johnson remembers walking into Legends for the first time when he was a child and getting to meet then Rams starting quarterback Vince Ferragamo and the team’s cheerleaders. When he helped purchase the sports bar he inherited a lot of memorabilia lining the walls that includes autographed balls from legendary athletes like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. When they took over, a “jaw dropping” gift to a his business partner—in the form of the Indy Car driven by Bobby Rahal during the Long Beach Grand Prix—was added to the interior decor. “It’s much more than a bar or restaurant,” Johnson said. “It’s like a sports hall of fame kind of deal when you walk in. Certainly the big screen is what sets it at a whole different level. I hear it all the time when I’m at the front door." Johnson’s ownership has made it a point to be a part of the community because he said as one of the businesses that’s synonymous with Long Beach, it’s a responsibility they hold to give back. They’ve sponsored local sports teams from area high schools and even hosted watch parties for Cal State Long Beach men’s basketball teams when awaiting their fates in the annual NCAA tournament. Whether its Monday Night Football, March Madness or FIFA’s World Cup, Legends is always one of the busiest bars inside and out, as people walking by can stop an view the action on the projector through its open patio lining the sidewalk. Johnson said that vibe is a big part of their success and has helped build a loyal patronage. The allure goes past the wings, burgers and beer, it’s the feelings imbedded in the memories while watching sports history unfold inside Legends. “We’ve got great food, great service, I love our location in the heart of Belmont Shore,” Johnson said. “But I think there’s a bit of nostalgia being the first modern sports bar in America, there’s definitely a nostalgia that goes with that. There’s been so many great games viewed in that location that there’s kind of an ambiance that you don’t get in other locations.” Legend's is located at 5236 E. 2nd Street in Belmont Shore. The importance of giving back https://legendssportsbar.com/the-importance-of-giving-back/ Thu, 31 Dec 2015 20:06:53 +0000 http://www.legendssportsbar.com/?p=2187 The Legends Sports Bar owners and community supports are seen here delivering all of the toys for childrens at Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, CA

It's about community and giving

IMG_1816 When we set out to re-invigorate the Legends brand on Belmont Shore, we knew that we could only accomplish this by having the right people working here, and visiting our great venue. Having the right people as patrons is the cornerstone of any business, and to accomplish this, it required that Legends Sports Bar create memorable experiences for our patrons and community to be a part of. We set out to connect ourselves with individuals that have a passion for helping, and this year, the results were clear. Our patrons, restaurant friends, employees and general community that make up Legends Sports Bar care very deeply about the Children in our community. On December 16th 2015 Legends Sports Bar had the pleasure of hosting our Third Annual Christmas for the Kids event where we opened up our SkyBox to any member of the community who wanted to participate in supporting the Children at Miller's Children's Hospital. Amazing people from all walks of life came to Legends with a manufacturer's wrapped toy for the kids and in return, Legends offered a plentiful Buffet and No host bar. The result was a stunning display of compassion and care. We would like to thank all of our friends, patrons, employees and Millers Children's Hospital Staff for extending the care and goodwill by participating in this year's Christmas for the Kids. Legends Congratulates Our Mixologist https://legendssportsbar.com/legends-congratulates-our-mixologist/ Mon, 07 Jul 2014 00:02:01 +0000 http://www.legendssportsbar.com/?p=1702 This picture depicts Rebecca Hinderer during her time spent as head bar tender at Legends Sports Bar. Rebecca now owns her own restaurant on Belmont Shore!

Art of Mixology Competition

Legends Sports Bar, the first modern sports bar in America, is proud to congratulate Rebecca Hinderer for taking home the prestigious affirmation of being the "Best Bar-Tender in Long Beach." Helens Hibiscus is the creation of Rebecca Hinderer Rebecca took home the honor by sharing with the Judges her very own creation dubbed "Helen’s Hibiscus"[pictured left], which is a gorgeous violet concoction served in a highball glass. "Helen's Hibiscus" is a creation that mixes layers of gin and Creme de Violette which presents itself as a sophisticated gem of a cocktail that is effortlessly enjoyed at any hour of the day. "One of the most important shifts in perspective we want our patrons to experience is that Legends Sports Bar is not just a 'Beer and Wings' spot," says Eric Johnson, principal of Legends Sports Bar. "We strive to offer our patrons the best of Sport - all sports - including the skill that Rebecca has mastered over the last six years of working as a bartender at Legends. We are so very proud of her taking home the title - it couldn't have been awarded to a more deserving person." While presenting her libation to the judges, Rebecca spoke nervously, yet eloquently, about the cocktail’s historical context, citing “the Roman influence came from my desire to appeal to women, hence the name Helen, which means 'the most beautiful woman.'” Helen’s Hibiscus is a combination of gin, basil, blackberry, Creme de Violette and Hibiscus rose-based soda water (which Rebecca made herself), garnished with an edible hibiscus and blackberry. Legends Sports Bar Congratulates Rebecca Hinderer for grabbing "The Best Bar Tender in Long Beach" title! Rebecca's inspiration comes from her six years of working at Legends and observing her female patrons. During her service at Legends she noted that “most women do not order gin," and that she "wanted to create a drink that would be palatable for women and not too sweet for men.” Rebecca is constantly seeking out new recipes that are both innovative and female-centric but male-friendly. Rebecca is not originally from the Long Beach area but now considers it her home. A professional woman who takes her job seriously, she did not expect to win the competition, but was “truly grateful for the opportunity to fundraise and compete alongside incredible mixologists.”]]>

Fuzzy Zoeller visits Legends Sports Bar https://legendssportsbar.com/fuzzy-zoeller-visits-legends-sports-bar/ Tue, 09 Apr 2013 01:36:17 +0000 http://www.legendssportsbar.com/?p=1413 Pictured here is Fuzzy Zoeller standing in front of Legends Sports bar with owners Matt and Eric

Fuzzy Zoeller. A golfer, a racer a Vodka guru (Fuzzy Vodka). He is one interesting man! As a legendary golfer, he was best known for his charismatic character and the name “fuzzy” was given to him because of his initials – Frank Urban Zoeller, “Fuzzy”. He is known and recognized around the world for his success and his outgoing personality that definitely leaves a lasting mark wherever he goes. It’s pretty amazing that Fuzzy has won ten times on the PGA Tour, including the most memorable 1979 Masters and 1984 US Open. His charisma also helped increase exposure of the 1985 and 1986 Skins Game competition by increasing the television viewership. Fuzzy Vodka, his premium vodka brand, is served at Legends Sports Bar and is a favored sponsor to Legends during the Long Beach Grand Prix. In fact, if you didn’t see it the week leading up to the race, Legends Sports Bar was honored to showcase the Fuzzy Race Team where we had the Indy Car staged for viewing right in front of Legends. We appreciated having Fuzzy visit Legends Sports Bar – as a Legendary golfer, we couldn’t have thought of a better place to tilt one back. Thanks for visiting Legends Sports Bar Fuzzy!]]>
