On Thursday December 14th 2017, Legends was proud to induct NFL great Marlin Briscoe into the “Legends Wall of Fame”. The induction of Mr. Briscoe, known as the “Magician”, marks the latest local athlete to have their picture hung on the famous walls of Legends. The Legends Wall of Fame started as far back as 1979 when Legends originally opened as the first sports bar in America. Honoring local sports greats has been a tradition at Legends for over 37 years. Marlin Briscoe started his career with the Denver Broncos as a rookie in the 14th-round of the 1968 draft. On October 6, 1968 he became the first starting African-American quarterback in the professional football league. Briscoe threw 14 touchdown passes that year in just 5 starts, including 4 on Nov 24 against Buffalo; both are still Broncos rookie records. He also threw for 335 yards in that game, a rookie record that stood until John Elway broke it in 1983, and one of only three 300+ yard rookie games in franchise history. He completed 41.5 percent of his passes, and averaged 7.1 yards per attempt and his 17.1 yards per completion led the American Football League (and ranks 18th all-time). He also ran for 308 yards and three touchdowns. After his rookie season, Briscoe never played quarterback again, but he enjoyed a splendid career as a receiver. After being traded to Buffalo he led the team in touchdown catches in each of his three seasons there and in receptions twice. In 1970 he was in the top two in receptions and receiving yards and became an All-Pro. After the AFL-NFL merger, he played in the National Football League from 1970 through 1976, mostly with American Football Conference teams. In 1971, the Bills traded Briscoe to the Miami Dolphins. Briscoe went on to win a pair of Super Bowls. Briscoe led the undefeated 1972 team with four touchdown receptions and was the leading receiver on the Dolphins in 1973, catching more passes than future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Paul Warfield. Briscoe made stops with the San Diego Chargers, and Detroit Lions before ending his career in 1976 with the New England Patriots. He is the only player to have been intercepted by a Patriot player and later to have caught a TD as a Patriot receiver. Upon retirement from professional sports, Briscoe moved to Los Angeles and enjoyed a successful career. Today, he works as the director of the Boys and Girls Club in Long Beach, California. He also founded a football camp for children in Long Beach as well. Legends is honored to have his picture and jersey hanging on their walls.]]>

Legends Sports Bar works to rekindle dream of flying Spruce Goose at Flugtag 2013 https://legendssportsbar.com/legends-sports-bar-works-to-rekindle-dream-of-flying-spruce-goose-at-flugtag-2013/ Sat, 21 Sep 2013 09:00:00 +0000 http://fredcei.com/?p=6579

LONG BEACH, CA, by Joe Segura of Long Beach Press Telegram Co-owners of the popular Belmont Shore sports bar Eric Johnson and David Copley are heading up a Legendary Team that hopes to rekindle the dream of Howard Hughes and his Spruce Goose. A miniature model of the famed aircraft is the team’s entry in the Red Bull Flugtag competition. Nearly 30 teams from as far away as Alaska will compete in Long Beach’s Sept. 21 event, launching their flying machines from Rainbow Harbor’s pier to see which will go the farthest. This year’s Flugtag, German for Flying Day, is a national event, with five cities hosting competitions on the same day: Long Beach, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Washington, D.C., Miami and Chicago. This is the second time it has been held in Long Beach. In 2010, the event drew more than 100,000 people to Rainbow Harbor and the Pike, jamming the area south of Ocean Boulevard as 36 teams launched off a 28-foot-high ramp from the Pine Avenue Pier. In that event, the human-powered semiflying machines included a grand piano, a giant pig and a larger-than-life mock-up of President Obama’s head. The 2010 event is considered the largest single-day event in terms of attendance in the city’s history. Johnson and Copley, also co-owners of the Auld Dubliner on Pine Avenue south of Ocean Boulevard, said that good progress has been made on the construction of their version of the legendary Spruce Goose, which flew Nov. 2, 1947, in the Long Beach Harbor, without the benefit of Red Bull energizing drinks. “We’re pretty far along,” Johnson said, adding that the fuselage is mostly done and work is beginning on the wings. The team members are all friends, and all have collaborated on the project, Johnson said, adding that the majority of the work has been done by the other team members. “They’ve put in a ton of hours,” he said. The five members of the Legendary Team are Johnson and Copley, and George Schano, Legends bar manager, Erik Bakker, a products developer, and Steve Gugerty, graphic designer. Until recently, they have worked mainly on weekends, including one water test in a friend’s pool. But with the competition less than two weeks away, they may have to put more hours into the project, the team members concluded during a Saturday work session. They estimated — figuring by a quick impromptu calculation — that they have worked about 80 hours. The miniature Spruce Goose, the team estimated, could end up weighing about 140 pounds: 80 pounds for the 20-foot-long fuselage, and about 60 pounds for the 26-foot-wide wings. The frame is made of a light aluminum and will be covered with sailcloth, according to Copley. The craft will be powered by the team members, who will run-push it off the Pine Avenue Pier launch site. On the Thursday before the Flugtag event, the Spruce Goose model will be showcased at the Legends bar, and on Friday it will be displayed at the Pine Avenue Circle. Despite the progress, the team members do not share confidence that it will actually fly. “We go back and forth on how far it will fly,” said Copley. Contact Joe Segura at 562-499-1274.]]>

Fuzzy Zoeller visits Legends Sports Bar https://legendssportsbar.com/fuzzy-zoeller-visits-legends-sports-bar/ Tue, 09 Apr 2013 01:36:17 +0000 http://www.legendssportsbar.com/?p=1413 Pictured here is Fuzzy Zoeller standing in front of Legends Sports bar with owners Matt and Eric

Fuzzy Zoeller. A golfer, a racer a Vodka guru (Fuzzy Vodka). He is one interesting man! As a legendary golfer, he was best known for his charismatic character and the name “fuzzy” was given to him because of his initials – Frank Urban Zoeller, “Fuzzy”. He is known and recognized around the world for his success and his outgoing personality that definitely leaves a lasting mark wherever he goes. It’s pretty amazing that Fuzzy has won ten times on the PGA Tour, including the most memorable 1979 Masters and 1984 US Open. His charisma also helped increase exposure of the 1985 and 1986 Skins Game competition by increasing the television viewership. Fuzzy Vodka, his premium vodka brand, is served at Legends Sports Bar and is a favored sponsor to Legends during the Long Beach Grand Prix. In fact, if you didn’t see it the week leading up to the race, Legends Sports Bar was honored to showcase the Fuzzy Race Team where we had the Indy Car staged for viewing right in front of Legends. We appreciated having Fuzzy visit Legends Sports Bar – as a Legendary golfer, we couldn’t have thought of a better place to tilt one back. Thanks for visiting Legends Sports Bar Fuzzy!]]>
